29,000 Children were killed in the Famine in Somalia






More than 29,000 children under the age of five have been killed bydrought and famine in Somalia, estimates from the U.S. shows.


Nancy Lindborg, assistant administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), told a congressionalcommittee in Washington on Wednesday that many children have been killed in the last 90 days in southern Somalia, the APreported.


The new figure is based on nutrition and mortality surveys areverified by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.


On Wednesday, the UN says there are three new areas of faminezones in Somalia, bringing the total number of five areas affected by famine.


The UN says 3.2 million Somalis in desperate need of immediate help to save their lives.


Somalia became the region most severely affected by famine inthe Horn of Africa, but parts of Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Djibouti are also affected by the disaster.
